Our classes

At the beginning of each of our classes both beginners and advanced students do a series of exercises through which they are introduced to the basic steps of tango and to the proper posture and elegance of movement that should be maintained at all times (and developed as a habitual way of dancing) when dancing tango. These exercises include, for example, steps like voleos, ochos, escobillas, enrosques.

We will teach you to combine these steps with a proper tango embrace which will allow you to maintain the correct distance from your partner as you move across the dance floor.

We must also highlight the most important thing for any tango dancer to do, which is to listen to the music. We cannot stress this enough . The music s what organizes and directs the dancer’s movements.

Although we dance all styles of tango, we teach primarily salon tango, which is considered to be the most authentic, elegant and creative style of tango. In each of our classes, however, we also dedicate some time to introduce and practice the waltz and the milonga.

As with the tango we make use of specific recordings of classical musical pieces, which we have specifically chosen because they have a beat that is easy to follow. You will dance, for example to the classic tangos of Darienzo, the sensual rhythms of Caló, and the forceful sounds of Puglise and his orchestra.

Julio Mariño y Mirabai Deranja: pasión por el tango

Leemos en el website de Julio y Mirabai

“Tango is the union of beings, even if just for a moment. It is the breath that you take as one when the music lifts you out of the mundane and carries you to another realm.
Julio Mariño
Julio started dancing Tango when he was 16 years old. He never imagined what a profound impact it would have on him. He quickly started dancing with a Tango group and took his first steps on stage. It was then that he discovered his passion”.

Classes and Philosophy

Private classes:
Would you like us to help you improve your dance skills more rapidly?  Please contact us for more information.

Group classes:
For classes in USA from June to September 2008 please see tour.

In Buenos Aires

  • Wednesdays – Tango – 22:00 to 23:30 Independencia 572 Capital Federal, Buenos Aires
  • Tuesdays – Tango – 19:00 to 20:30 Av Arturo Illia 2340 San Justo, Buenos Aires

Our teaching philosophy:
We teach our students the reasons behind the movement. We teach them how to use the energy of the moment instead of trying to force a step to happen.

When the students understand the concepts of what they are trying to accomplish, they can easily apply their knowledge to other parts of their dance and progress very quickly. When they know the rules, they can choose when and how to break them.

Our priority is to impart knowledge that will allow our students to improvise on the dance floor as well as execute choreography. “The union of the dance partner is seen when they follow each other. For that to be possible, it’s essential that both people have freedom of body and mind; only then does it become possible to truly dance together.”

We focus on weight changes in both the individual and shared axises, depending on the figure at hand. We never stop paying attention to posture and the expression of each movement. But most important of all, is the connection throughout the song, creating a fluid dance instead of many separate steps.

To use musicality in Tango is to follow the exact definition of dancing in the dictionary: “Dance: to move one’s feet or body, or both, rhythmically in a pattern of steps, to the accompaniment of music.” This means that one dances for the music. The music exists first and the figures come afterwards. One must create the steps of the dance as the music fills the room, not adapt pre-existing sequences.

In both private and group classes we determine the technique that will enable each student to grow. We look at their individual style helping them to take advantage of their natural talents.

Julio’s dance is enriched by many different styles: traditional tango, fantasy, theatrical and nuevo tango. He applies the techniques when appropriate, giving each movement a unique feel. It enables him to vary the dynamics of his dance as a whole.

Beyond doubt his most characteristic feature is the passion and vivacity that he portrays when he dances.

Mirabai Deranja

My parents finally allowed me to go to dance class when I was four years old. I couldn’t understand what had taken them so long. My Russian ballet teacher wouldn’t let me start ballet until I was eight; she said that my bones needed to set first.

From that time on, I’ve been learning every dance style I can, finding satisfaction in each. I graduated with a degree in Astronomy and have danced professionally in Jazz, Swing, Blues, Salsa, and Tango. But when I found tango, I felt like I had come home.
